In the heart of Bern’s Old Town stands the Zytglogge, the city’s famous medieval clock tower. It was built in the 13th century and later became one of Bern’s most recognisable landmarks. After the great fire of 1405, the tower was transformed into a clock tower.
Today, visitors gather there just before the hour to watch its moving figures: bears, a jester, a rooster and Chronos, the god of time. The clock mechanism dates from around 1530, making the Zytglogge a beautiful reminder of Bern’s medieval past.
