Bern is Switzerland’s federal city and one of the country’s most charming historic centres. Its Old Town was founded in the 12th century on a hill surrounded by the River Aare, which still curves beautifully around the city today.
The medieval centre is so well preserved that it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Bern is known for its sandstone buildings, covered arcades, fountains, the Zytglogge clock tower and its strong connection with bears, the city’s symbol.
Today, Bern feels both historic and relaxed: a capital city with narrow old streets, river views and a calm Swiss atmosphere.
