HALLIG HOOGE – Kirchwarft

Hallig Hooge is a small, low-lying island in the North Frisian Wadden Sea, off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. It is the second-largest of the Halligen and covers about 6 km². Unlike ordinary islands, Halligen are almost flat and can be partly flooded during storm tides, a phenomenon known locally as “Landunter”.
The houses on Hallig Hooge are built on raised mounds called Warften, so that people, animals and buildings remain safe when the sea covers the surrounding meadows. With its thatched roofs, green fields, sheep, wind and wide skies, Hooge feels like a small world shaped by the rhythm of the North Sea.
Today, the island is part of the Wadden Sea landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage area known for its mudflats, birdlife and tidal nature. Life on Hallig Hooge is quiet, exposed and deeply connected to the sea: a place where land and water constantly meet.
