The historic Ta’ Kola Windmill stands beside the Ġgantija Visitors’ Centre in the village of Xagħra, Gozo. The original windmill was built in 1725 during the rule of the Knights of St. John, but poor construction meant it had to be rebuilt on a new site in 1787.
The windmill takes its name from its last miller, Żeppu ta’ Kola (Joseph, son of Nikola), who operated it for many years. When the wind was strong enough for grinding grain, the miller would blow a triton shell to signal villagers to bring their wheat to be turned into flour.
Today, visitors can explore the restored machinery, workshop, and living quarters of the miller’s family. The rooms are furnished with traditional tools and household items, helping visitors imagine daily life in Gozo before modern technology. As one of the few surviving windmills from the Knights’ period, Ta’ Kola Windmill remains an important symbol of Malta’s agricultural heritage.
