Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It was founded around 1070 by William the Conqueror after the Norman invasion of England. What began as a wooden fortress soon grew into a magnificent stone castle and royal residence.
Over the centuries, many monarchs expanded and redesigned the castle. During the reign of Henry VIII, Windsor became a favorite royal home. Later, Queen Victoria spent much of her life there, helping turn it into a symbol of the British monarchy.
Today, Windsor Castle remains an official residence of the British monarch and is closely associated with Queen Elizabeth II, who spent many weekends there during her reign. Visitors from around the world come to admire its grand State Apartments, the historic St George’s Chapel, and the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony.
