SAN SEBASTIAN – The Basilica of Santa María del Coro

In the old town of San Sebastián, the Basilica of Santa María del Coro rises at the end of a narrow street like a baroque stage set. Built in the 18th century on the remains of an earlier Romanesque temple, it became the city’s grand spiritual centerpiece. Its richly carved façade, crowned with a statue of Saint Sebastian, once greeted sailors returning from the Bay of Biscay.
Inside, the church glows with gilded altarpieces and soft blue light filtering through high windows. The main altarpiece, dedicated to the Virgin, reflects the strong Marian devotion of the Basque people. Beneath the church lie traces of older fortifications, a reminder that this elegant basilica stands on centuries of layered history.
Today, Santa María remains both a place of worship and a quiet refuge in the lively old town – an enduring link between San Sebastián’s past and its thriving present.
