In the old town of San Sebastián, the Basilica of Santa María del Coro rises at the end of a narrow street like a baroque stage set. Built in the 18th century on the remains of an earlier Romanesque temple, it became the city’s grand spiritual centerpiece. Its richly carved façade, crowned with a statue of Saint Sebastian, once greeted sailors returning from the Bay of Biscay.
Inside, the church glows with gilded altarpieces and soft blue light filtering through high windows. The main altarpiece, dedicated to the Virgin, reflects the strong Marian devotion of the Basque people.
