Dortmund Zoo, nestled beside the peaceful Rombergpark, is one of Germany’s most green and inviting urban zoos. Founded in 1953, it has grown into a place known for its spacious, naturalistic habitats and a special focus on animals from South America. Giant anteaters, tapirs, maned wolves, and capybaras all find a home here, making the zoo a unique destination for wildlife lovers.
Among all these residents, the suricates—meerkats—remain some of the biggest stars. Their sandy habitat is always buzzing with activity: guards stand upright on lookout duty, youngsters squeak and chase each other, and the whole group works together to dig the tunnels that form their underground world. Their cooperation and curiosity charm children and adults alike, making them ambassadors for desert conservation
