ROCHEFORT – LAVAUX-SAINTE-ANNE – Red Deer

Lavaux-Sainte-Anne is a village in the province of Namur, Belgium, best known for the Château de Lavaux-Sainte-Anne, a 15th-century castle surrounded by wetlands. The area around the castle is part of a wider natural zone that includes forests, marshes, and meadows, which provide suitable habitat for European red deer (cerfs élaphes).
Although the immediate surroundings of the castle are protected for conservation and tourism, the larger region – especially the forests of the Famenne and Ardenne – supports a stable population of red deer. These animals are frequently monitored by local wildlife authorities, and deer activity is especially noticeable during the rutting season in early autumn, which attracts many nature observers.
Thus, Lavaux-Sainte-Anne is not famous because of a specific legendary stag, but rather because it sits at the border of one of Belgium’s important natural areas where wild red deer are commonly found, making it a notable spot for both cultural heritage and wildlife observation.
