BRUGGE – Gruuthuse Museum

In the heart of medieval Bruges stands the Gruuthuse Museum, once the opulent home of the powerful lords of Gruuthuse. The family built its fortune on the trade of gruut – a medieval herb mixture used to brew beer before hops became common. Their monopoly on this ingredient made them immensely wealthy, and the mansion they expanded in the 15th century reflects that prosperity.
Louis de Gruuthuse, the family’s most famous member, was a close confidant of the Burgundian dukes and a great patron of the arts. Under his influence, the residence became a symbol of refinement: carved wooden ceilings, stained glass, tapestries, and one of the earliest known indoor oratories overlooking a church.
Today, the Gruuthuse Museum guides visitors through five centuries of Bruges’ history. Within its walls, everyday objects, works of art, and lavish household items paint a vivid picture of life in the city—from its golden age as a trading hub to its quieter periods. The mansion, once a private showpiece of power and elegance, now preserves Bruges’ story for everyone who passes through its historic doors.
