The family built its fortune on the trade of gruut – a medieval herb mixture used to brew beer before hops became common. Their monopoly on this ingredient made them immensely wealthy, and the mansion they expanded in the 15th century reflects that prosperity.
Louis de Gruuthuse, the family’s most famous member, was a close confidant of the Burgundian dukes and a great patron of the arts. Under his influence, the residence became a symbol of refinement: carved wooden ceilings, stained glass, tapestries, and one of the earliest known indoor oratories overlooking a church.
