TULUM – Maya Ruins

Tulum is a Pre-Columbian walled city of the Maya civilization located on the Caribbean Sea coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. There is also a modern town of the same name nearby, often called Tulum Pueblo. The ancient Mayans called it ‘The city of dawn,’ surely because of the spectacular view each morning when the sun rises over the Caribbean sea, lighting up the sky and the water with brilliant fiery colors. The buildings constructed in Tulum pertain to the early Postclassic period and have much Toltec influence. The architecture may not be as impressive as other sites, such as Chichen Itza, Tikal, or Coba where there are taller buildings, but the combination of the majestic structures of Tulum against the turquoise Caribbean sea and the emerald green of the tropical jungle around them makes it an unforgettable visit. This is the only Mayan archaeological site constructed by the sea.
