SIAULIAI – Hill of Crosses

The Hill of Crosses is a hill fort stretching for about 60-70 metres in an East-West direction. Its width reaches 40-50 metres, and it is a little sunk in the middle, thus its form resembles a saddle. The history of the hill is related to Christianity, and it has lasted for about two centuries. In the 10-15th centuries there was a wooden hill fort here protecting the northern lands of Šiauliai from the Livonian Order. The first crosses on the Jurgaièiai hill fort were placed as a symbol of a devout people’s gratitude to God. The second impulse for the emergence of the Hill was the desire to honour the rebels who died during the uprising of 1863 and who were buried here. The development of the Hill of Crosses was related to the Church from the very start. The spontaneous faith of the people was supported and encouraged by priests of the local parish. As far back as at the end of the 19th century the Hill of Crosses was considered to be a sacred place and it was visited by worshipers even from remote parishes. On 7 September 1993, Blessed Pope John Paul II visited the Hill, prayed here during a Holy Mass and addressed the people.
