ROTTERDAM – Diergaarde Blijdorp – 1957-2007

Diergaarde Blijdorp, located in the northwest of Rotterdam, is one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. The original Rotterdam zoo was lost in the bombing of Rotterdam in World War II, which also destroyed most of the city centre. Some streetnames still remember to the old zoo, such as ‘Diergaardesingel’ (‘Zoolane’). ‘Blijdorp’ was rebuilt slightly to the north, its current location. With its visitor count of around 1.5 million people a year (2005), Diergaarde Blijdorp is certainly one of the biggest attractions in the Netherlands. But it is certainly more than simply a tourist attraction. Nature conservation, recreation, education and applied scientific research are what Rotterdam Zoo places at the top of its priorities.
