REYKJAVIK – Perlan

Perlan (the Pearl) is a magnificent structure and a landmark building in Reykjavík, situated on the hill Öskjuhlíð where there have been hot water storage tanks for decades. In 1991 the tanks were updated and a hemispherical structure was placed on top. Hollow steel framing supports the glass dome and walls link six aluminum-sided tanks, each of which can contain 4 million liters of natural hot spring water averaging 85°C . One of the water tanks at Perlan has recently been cleared out in order to hold the Saga Museum. It tells about the Icelandic sagas as well as some other history. It also shows how Icelanders used to live and how they live now.Perlan also comprises a large exhibition area, a gourmet shop, souvenir shop, Christmas shop, a cafetaria and a viewing deck.
