REIMS – Smiling Angel

Stone sculpture from the statue of The Smiling Angel (L’ange au sourrire), located on the central portal of the cathedral of Reims and the original of which was carved between 1236 and 1245. This monumental sculpture whose original is more than two meters is certainly one of the most famous angels of medieval statuary. His hands are open in a gesture of protection and hospitality. His smile at once radiant and mysterious invites to optimism and its expression reflects the freshness and candor peculiar to Gothic art.
