The old elephant facilities that have been their home since 1999 was converted into two new zoo habitats. Knie’s Kinderzoo has built a centrally located botanical area with vegetation that evokes the ecosystem of dry savannah. The entire facility is constructed to emulate an African (tropical) grassland environment. Right next to it there is a section of landscape resembling the Pacific coast of Chile. The Knie family’s goal is to create two habitat environments that meet the particular needs of a colony of Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) and southern cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus).
