LATVIA – State Border Guard

The Border Guard functions are to ensure the inviolability of the state border and the prevention of illegal migration. On 18th November, 1918, proclaiming the independence of the Republic of Latvia, the People’s Council declaratively determined the state border. For the purpose of its protection on 7th November, 1919, a position of Chief of the Border Guard was established and the border guard’s units were formed. In 1991 Latvia reinstated its independence, the state border was newly established. 13th December, 1991, is the date of the Border Guard reinstatement.
