KANDAVA – Kandava

Kandava is an ancient small town in Kurzeme (Courland). It is a pearl in the valley of the River Abava and it is also the gateway to ‘Switzerland of Kurzeme (Courland)’. The name of Kandava was first mentioned in 1230.The Stone Bridge across Abava River in Kandava is the oldest rubble – stone bridge in Latvia. It was built in 1873.Historicaly the name of Kandava is connected with horse whipping. The steep rubble stone paved streets were not suitable for horse carts.Kandava has a charming but impressive nature thanks to the River Abava. It has a ancient feeling to it because of the historical town centre, the Hillforts and the oak trees.Kandava’s coat of arms has an oak branch with three acorns included. This oak tree represents unbreakable strenght.
