CORSICA – La Citadelle de Corte

Corte is a fortified town that lies in the centre of Corsica. Between 1755-69 it became the country’s capital when Pasquale Paoli led Corsica to its short-lived independence. Today it is home to the island’s university which gives it a young, lively feel which is refreshingly devoid of tourists. Corte is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding mountains that provide skiing opportunities in winter and excellent walking and climbing in summer. Also a must-see are the Gorges de la Restonica which lie approx. 12 km out of town on the D623 or the Foret de Vizzavona with its trout streams and walking trails.
