CESIS – Cesis Castle

Cesis castle is one of the few architectural monuments of the 13th century in Latvia. In the early Middle Ages it was a residence of the Master of the Livonian order. To be initiated into knight of the order, one had to stand difficult tests and make four solemn vows – obedience, purity, poverty and battle against the pagans in the name of Christ.Today only ruins are left from the mighty medieval castle, unique by size and authenticity in the entire Baltics. But the long history of the castle doesn’t come to the end. Traditional knights’ tournaments, festivals and open-air theatrical performances attract visitors from countries all over the world.
