Only one peak in Switzerland is known as the ‘Queen of the Mountains’ – the Rigi. Situated between the lakes of Lucerne and Zug and the Lauerzersee, the Rigi stands like a bastion on the approaches to the Gotthard. It is a fairly long ridge line with several peaks. The highest point is about 1.800 meter, quite low by Swiss mountain standards, but the views are excellent.Ascended by rack-and-pinion railways (built in the 1870s), it commands one of the most famous views in the world—a panorama of nearly 290 kilometers.
