The Schönbrunn Palm House, called the Palmenhaus in German, is one of the most impressive historic greenhouses in Europe.
It was built for Emperor Franz Joseph I. Construction took place in 1881–1882, following designs by court architect Franz Xaver Segenschmid. It stands on the former site of Schönbrunn’s Dutch Botanical Garden.
It is more than 110 metres long. The building has a 28-metre-high central pavilion and two slightly lower side pavilions.
Around 45,000 panes of glass cover the structure. Its total floor area is approximately 2,500 square metres, with around 4,900 square metres of glass.
The building contains three different climate zones. The northern pavilion is kept cool, the central pavilion has a temperate climate, and the southern pavilion houses tropical plants. Tunnel-like corridors connect the three sections.
