VIENNA – Schönbrunn Palace – Empress Elisabeth of Austria

Empress Elisabeth of Austria, commonly known as Empress Sisi, was born on December 24, 1837, in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, and she died on September 10, 1898. She was a prominent figure in European history and a member of the House of Wittelsbach.
Marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I: Elisabeth married her cousin, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, in 1854 when she was just 16 years old.
Elisabeth had a strong desire for independence and a love for travel. She often traveled extensively, particularly to countries like Greece, Hungary, and Madeira, seeking solitude and escape from the constraints of court life.
She was assassinated in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1898, by an Italian anarchist named Luigi Lucheni. Her death was a shocking event that deeply affected the Austrian Empire.
