TOULOUSE – Nymphe Chasseresse

At the Musée des Augustins, the Nymphe Chasseresse (“Hunting Nymph”) is a refined example of classical-inspired sculpture displayed within the museum’s rich collection of European art.
Created in a style influenced by antiquity, the statue depicts a youthful female figure associated with the hunt. She reflects the ideals of balance, movement, and natural beauty that artists admired in Greek mythology and Roman mythology. The figure is typically linked to the world of Artemis – or Diana – whose companions were nymphs living in forests and wild landscapes.
The sculpture in Toulouse is not an ancient original but part of a later artistic tradition that revived classical themes, likely dating from the early modern period. Artists of that time studied ancient models to recreate ideal human forms and mythological subjects with elegance and precision.
