At the Convento de Cristo in the town of Tomar stands one of the most extraordinary windows in Europe: the Janela do Capítulo.
Built in the early 16th century during the reign of King Manuel I, the window is a masterpiece of the Manueline style, a uniquely Portuguese form of late Gothic architecture rich in maritime symbolism. Carved from stone, it resembles a tangle of ropes, seaweed, coral, and nautical elements—reflecting Portugal’s age of exploration.
The window decorates the chapter house of the former Knights Templar monastery, later used by the Order of Christ. Its dramatic design is often interpreted as a symbol of both spiritual vigilance and imperial power, merging religion with the seafaring identity of Portugal.
Today, the Janela do Capítulo remains one of the most iconic features of the convent, admired for its intricate craftsmanship and historical significance.
