In the grand halls of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer, visitors are invited to step back over two thousand years. The exhibition “Caesar & Cleopatra” tells the dramatic story of two of the most fascinating figures of the ancient world.
Julius Caesar, the ambitious Roman general, met Cleopatra, the young and intelligent queen of Egypt, in a world shaken by wars, power struggles, and the collapse of old empires. Their encounter was more than just romance: it was a turning point in history. Together, they stood at the crossroads of East and West, of tradition and change.
Through treasures from famous museums across Europe, vivid reconstructions, and interactive displays, the exhibition reveals how their destinies were entwined with the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the first emperor, Augustus. Visitors wander between Roman marble statues, Egyptian relics, and digital reconstructions that bring ancient Alexandria to life.
It is a story of love and politics, glamour and betrayal, played out on the world’s greatest stage—and now retold in Speyer, from April to October 2025.
