NEUHAUSEN AM RHEINFALL – The Rhine Falls

The Rhine Falls have thundered at the border of Switzerland and Germany for thousands of years, long before any traveler had words to describe them. Formed during the last Ice Age – about 15,000 years ago – the falls emerged when shifting glaciers redirected the course of the Rhine River, forcing it over a hard band of ancient limestone. As the water carved the land, the river split into channels and cascades, creating the broad, powerful waterfall known today.
By the Middle Ages, merchants traveling between Lake Constance and the bustling trade cities of the Upper Rhine were already speaking of the falls with a mix of awe and respect. Even then, visitors climbed rocky paths to get a closer look at the spray and thunder.
In the 19th century, as Europe industrialized, engineers studied the falls as a potential source of hydropower. Though small power stations were built upstream, the main cascade was ultimately preserved, sparing the natural wonder from major alteration. Today, The Rhine Falls stand as Europe’s largest waterfall by volume, attracting millions each year who watch the torrent crash around the iconic central rock, rising defiantly in the middle of the river.
Despite centuries of change around it—shifting borders, expanding towns, and modern rail lines—the roar of the Rhine Falls has remained constant, echoing through history just as it did when the glaciers retreated and the river found its new path.
