HUY – Le Fort de Huy

Le Fort de Huy, also known as the Fortress of Huy, is a historical fortress located in the town of Huy, in the province of Liège, Belgium. The fortress stands on a strategic hilltop overlooking the town and the Meuse River, offering a commanding view of the surrounding area. It has played a significant role in various historical conflicts throughout the centuries.
The site has been fortified since the early Middle Ages, but the current structure largely dates back to the 19th century. It was built in 1818 by the Dutch during the period when Belgium was part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. During the German occupation of Belgium in World War II, the fort was used as a prison by the Nazis. It held political prisoners, resistance fighters, and other individuals targeted by the regime.
The fortress is a prime example of military architecture, with thick walls and bastions designed to repel attacks. Its elevated position made it a formidable defense point, and its design reflects the evolution of fortress construction from medieval to modern times.
Today, Le Fort de Huy serves as a museum. It houses exhibitions that focus on the history of the fort, including its role during the Nazi occupation and its broader historical significance in Belgium. The site is also a popular tourist destination due to its historical importance and stunning panoramic views over the Meuse River and the town of Huy.
