Gjirokastër lies in the Drino Valley in southern Albania. Known as the “City of Stone,” it is famous for its steep cobbled streets, grey stone roofs and large Ottoman-era houses. Its historic centre is protected by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage site “Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra.”
Above the town stands Gjirokastër Castle, a massive fortress overlooking the valley. Below it, the old bazaar has been the heart of the town since at least the 17th century. Together, the castle, bazaar and traditional houses make Gjirokastër one of Albania’s best-preserved historic cities.
