DONOSTIA/SAN SEBASTIAN – Lauburu

The Basque Country also called the Basque Autonomous Community, is an autonomous community in northern Spain. It includes the Basque provinces of Álava, Biscay, and Gipuzkoa. It also surrounds an enclave called Treviño, which belongs to the neighboring autonomous community of Castile and León.
The Basque Country or Basque Autonomous Community was granted the status of nationality within Spain, attributed by the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
The Lauburu (from Basque lau, “four” + buru, “head”) is a traditional Basque symbol consisting of four comma-shaped figures arranged in a cross-like pattern. It’s often interpreted as a symbol of fertility, life, and regeneration, with each of its four arms representing different elements such as earth, air, fire, and water. The Lauburu is deeply rooted in Basque culture and can be found in various contexts, including art, jewelry, and architecture. Its precise origins and meanings have been subject to debate and interpretation over time. In the past, it has also been associated with the Galicians, Illyrians and Asturians.
