CYPRUS – PAPHOS – Tombs of Kings

The final resting place of about 100 Ptolemaic aristocrats who lived and died in the city between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD. It is a warren of underground mausoleums which are carved out of solid rocks honeycombed with sarcophagus and open courtyards with Doric columns. Archaeological finds indicate that inhabitants also used these tombs as secret hideaways from the invading armies.
