In 2026, the Belgian National Railway Company (SNCB/NMBS) celebrates its 100th anniversary. Officially established on 23 July 1926, the company was created to modernise and manage Belgium’s extensive railway network.
Belgium’s railway history began even earlier, on 5 May 1835, with the opening of the first passenger railway on the European continent, connecting Brussels and Mechelen.
Over the past century, Belgian railways have evolved from steam locomotives to modern electric trains, connecting cities, communities and generations. Today, SNCB/NMBS continues to play a vital role in Belgian mobility.
