BÉDEILHAC-ET-AYNAT – The Grotte de Bédeilhac

Hidden beneath the Soudour mountain in Ariège, the Grotte de Bédeilhac has an enormous entrance and a main gallery stretching around 750 metres underground. Prehistoric people lived here during the Magdalenian period, leaving behind paintings, engravings and rare clay sculptures of animals.
The cave also played an unusual role during the Second World War, when its entrance was adapted to store and repair aircraft. Today, it is protected as a Historic Monument and offers visitors a remarkable combination of natural formations, prehistoric art and modern history.
