MIRA DE AIRE – Grutas de Mira de Aire – Stalactites

The Grutas de Mira de Aire are the largest and one of the most famous cave systems in Portugal, located near the town of Mira de Aire in the central region of the country. These stunning limestone caves are a popular tourist destination due to their spectacular rock formations and underground lakes.
The caves were discovered in 1947, but they were only opened to the public in 1974. Since then, they have become a significant natural attraction in Portugal.
They are formed from limestone, shaped over millions of years by the gradual dissolution of rock by water. Stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and other intricate formations fill the caverns, providing visitors with a dazzling display of natural beauty.
The Grutas de Mira de Aire extend for over 11 kilometers, but only about 600 meters of the caves are open to the public.
