LONDON – The Natural History Museum – Triceratops

Triceratops is one of the most famous and easily recognizable dinosaurs, known for its large, bony frill and three facial horns. It lived during the late Cretaceous period, about 68 to 66 million years ago, in what is now North America. Triceratops is one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to have existed before the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.
Triceratops was a large herbivore, growing up to about 9 meters in length and weighing between 6 to 12 tons.
It had three prominent horns on its face: two large ones above its eyes and a smaller one on its nose. These horns were likely used for defence against predators.
Triceratops was a herbivore, feeding primarily on low-growing plants such as cycads, ferns, and other plants. Its beak-like mouth and powerful jaws were ideal for chopping and grinding tough vegetation.
There is ongoing debate about whether Triceratops lived in herds or more solitary lives. Some fossil evidence suggests that they might have gathered in groups, while others propose more solitary behavior.
Triceratops is often depicted in battles with predators like Tyrannosaurus rex, thanks to its formidable horns and massive build, making it one of the most iconic dinosaurs in popular culture.
