Right next to the Nidaros Cathedral lies a palace that dates back to the early Middle Ages.From 1152 and until the reformation in 1537, this palace was where the archbishops had their seat and administrative office. Today, these grounds houses two public areas; the Museum and the Crown Regalia exhibition.In 1983 a big fire burned down two of the large wooden buildings in the Archbishop’s Palace. The Museum was built on the same grounds where these original buildings once stood. During the archaeological excavations of the grounds in the 1990s, a lot of exciting elements from the Middle Ages were discovered. Today you can walk through an amazing exhibition of original sculptures from the Cathedral, as well as the results of the archaeological excavations, such as an entire mint!The Norwegian Crown Jewels unites national symbols with exquisite goldsmith art and are exhibited in the cellar of the west wing in the Archbishop’s Palace. The exhibition presents the last coronation in 1906 as well as the benediction in 1958 and 1991. The first coronation in Scandinavia and in Norway was in 1163 or 64, when the seven year old king Magnus Erlingsson was crowned in Bergen.
