VALGIOIE – Sacra di San Michele

The Sacra of San Michele, an imposing religious architectural complex of Romanesque times, was founded around 1000 A.D. is the symbolic monument of the Piemonte (Piedmont) Region since 1994. Founded as a Benedictine abbey, it is one of the oldest places of worship dedicated to the Arcangelo Michele (Archangel Michael); the Rosminians fathers are its current custodians.
From towers of Sacra di San Michele you can admire the city of Torino and a breath-taking view of the Val Susa. Royal members of the House of Savoy are buried inside the main church, which dates back to the twelfth century.
Dedicated to the cult of Archangel Michael, defender of the Christian people, the Sacra is a stage of a 2000 km pilgrimage route which runs from Mont-Saint-Michel (France) to Monte Sant’Angelo (Puglia).
