Oslo – Osebergskipet – Universitet I Oslo

The Oseberg ship was built in western Norway about 820 AD. The ship itself is made of oak and the mast, about 10-13 meters high, is made of pine. The Oseberg ship was in use before the burial and was both a sailing and rowing ship. There are 15 openings for oars on each side, so fully-manned it could hold 30 oarsmen. With its elaborate woodcarving, it was made to appear as particularly noble and spectacular. The Oseberg burial was excavated near Tønsberg in 1904.
