The Lusatian Lakeland (Lausitzer Seenland) is the largest artificial lake landscape in Europe, created in the remediated zone of former lignite mines.
Sedlitz Lake, Sedlitzer See, is one of the lakes located here. In just twenty years, more than 16,000 ha had been converted to a green tourist friendly zone. By the late 1990s, the new post-mining landscape, consisting of large lakes in residual pits and new forests planted on rubble plateaus, syarted to take shape. While timber forest covers most of the rehabilitated areas, the creation of several dozen new lakes, the largest of which covers several hundred ha, has made it possible to provide a new future for tourism. The former Sedlitz open-cast mine has been flooded since 2005. The flooding of Lake Sedlitz is expected to continue until 2025. It will then be the largest artificial lake in the Lusatian Lakeland.
