The Gokstad ship was built between 885 AD and 892 AD, at the height of the Viking period. Flexible in its use, it could sail across the oceans on voyages of exploration, trade and raids as it was both a sailing and rowing ship. There are 15 openings for oars on each side, so fully-manned it could hold 30 oarsmen and with steersman and lookout, it could hold a crew of 34. The Gokstad burial was excavated near Sandefjord in1880 AD.
