LONDON – The Natural History Museum – Fern the Diplodocus

Fern the Diplodocus is a charming character that has gained popularity, particularly among children and families, as a friendly representation of the Diplodocus dinosaur. The Diplodocus, a long-necked herbivorous dinosaur from the Jurassic period, is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs due to its enormous size and distinctive body shape.
After three years of collaboration between paleontologists, artists, and engineers to create an accurate and structurally sound representation of the Diplodocus was made. Creating a life-size bronze Diplodocus involves significant engineering challenges because of the dinosaur’s enormous size and the need to accurately represent its long neck, tail, and relatively small limbs in a material as heavy as bronze.
As soon as it was installed at the Natural History museum, it’s got a nickname “Fern the Diplodocus” and become a symbol of the London Natural History Museum.
