One of Latvia’s most beloved female authors, who penned both poems and plays, Aspazija (1865-1943) was also the wife of Latvia’s most important literary figure, Rainis. She was an outspoken defender of women’s rights and wrote for the renegade publication Dienas Lapa while her husband was imprisoned in a Russian prison for being the editor of the same publication. Both actively took part in the 1905 Revolution and later fled to Switzerland to avoid reprisals for their involvement in the failed movement. They returned to Latvia in 1920 and helped in the creation of the new Latvian Republic. Aspazija spent her last days in this beautiful wooden building, which is a now a museum dedicated to her remarkable life. Aspazija’s House in Dubulti is the most unusual and the most beautiful museum in Jūrmala. It was the will of the poetess’ for this house to become a place to meet for writers, artists, photographers and other intellectuals from Riga, Jūrmala and Latvia. Various poetry recitals, concerts and talks take place here. The special atmosphere of House of Aspazija is created by music, art and history; the restored exhibition of the museum helps experience the spirit of the last century, via not only early 20th century household items and interiors, but also projected holograms and interactive educational games.
