KWAZULU-NATAL – Humpback Whale

The Humpback Whale is a mammal which belongs to the baleen whale suborder. It is a large whale: an adult usually ranges between 12 to 16 meters long and weighs approximately 36 tonnes. It is well known for its breaching (leaping out of the water), its unusually long front fins, and its complex whale song. The Humpback Whale lives in oceans and seas around the world. Humpback whales feed on small schooling fish (e.g., herring and mackerel) and krill, a small shrimp-like crustacean that form massive swarms in the ocean. Humpbacks consume about 1 ton of fish during a single day! They store all of this accumulated energy in their blubber layer, which allows them to go without food during the winter months.
