GOLDAU – Bergsturz von Goldau

On 2 September 1806 the largest disaster in the past history of Switzerland occurred. At the south flank of the Rossberg in the canton Schwyz an enormous rock mass (almost 40 million m³) separated and thundered down in the valley. The landslide buried the two villages Goldau and Roethen. It caused the death of 457 humans, over 100 houses, 220 stable/barns as well as 4 church/chapels were destroyed.The town Goldau, which belongs to Arth SZ, was again developed on the scree. A museum outside the Nature and Animal park shows findings and photos of this natural disaster.
