Thousands of years ago sea rustled over Babite district. Around the 4-3rd millennium BC the sea retreated and settlements of fishermen and hunters began to form.Babite district has been affected by almost all the wars that have taken place in Latvian. Many monuments and sites keep evidence of historical events.On 01.07.2009 Sala and Babite parishes were merged and Babite district was created. Babîtes district is home to more than 9 300 inhabitants and an area of 24 193,7 ha. 61% of the territory is covered by forests, waters and swamps.Four special areas of conservation are located in the district – one of the most significant nature reserve is lake Babîte – shallow, coastal lagoon lake with high species diversity.
