The Sumatran tiger is unfortunately seriously threatened. Scientists estimate that there are only a few hundred animals in the wild on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The precious fur, the demand for tiger body parts for medicinal use, large-scale deforestation and the increasing conflicts between the growing human population and these big cats make sure that the numbers of tigers shockingly running backwards. For that reason, the European zoos that are members of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) jointly set up a breeding program to manage as well as possible the Sumatran tiger population in zoos with scientific accuracy in order to increase it. A few years ago Royal Burgers’ Zoo received permission to breed with Sumatran tigers the coordinator of this breeding program. You can see them in the theme of Rimba – life in Southeast Asian tropical forests.
