Vyšehrad

Vyšehrad is a castle located in the Czech Republic, built in the tenth century, on a hill over the Vltava River. Situated within the castle is the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, as well as the Vyšehrad cemetery, containing the remains of many famous people from Czech history, among them Antonín Dvoøák, Bedøich Smetana and Karel Èapek. After 1650 Ferdinand III began to build a Vyšehrad citadel – a baroque fortress, created by high brick rampart in the shape of five-sided block with six corner towers. In 1742, in time of French occupation, the French army built casemates in this area. Prussian and Austrian armies who also sticked around there, improved the buildings. Vyšehrad and the area around it became part of the capital city, Prague, in 1883.
