Sette Giugno (7 ta’ Ġunju 1919) is a Maltese national holiday celebrated annually on June 7. It commemorates events which occurred on that day in 1919 when, following a series of riots by the Maltese population, British troops fired into the crowd, killing four. This led to increased resistance and support for the pro-Italian parties that had challenged the British presence on the island.The 7 ta’ Ġunju 1919/Sette Giugno 1919/7th June 1919 monument by Anton Aigus was inaugurated 1986. The monument commemorates the Maltese revolution of 7th and 8th June 1919, when people gathered to protest against British rule. The soldiers fired into an unarmed crowd, killing Manwel Attard, Wenzu Dyer and Ġużè Bajada on the 7th, while Karmenu Abela died the next day on the 8th. The four names of the men are inscribed on the monument, however six figures are represented, as two more died from wounds a few days later, they were Cikku Darmanin and Toni Caruana. Malta was granted self government in 1921.
