The Polar Museum is situated in an historic Customs warehouse, which dates back to 1830 and has an idyllic location on the waterfront in the historic Skansen area. The museum currently has collections encompassing objects, photographs, moving pictures, polar literature and documents, with considerable emphasis on Tromsø’s own polar historical traditions. One section of the museum focuses on hunting and trapping in the Arctic. The exhibition concerning the hunting of the polar bear and Arctic fox is based around an original trapper’s hut. The other main category of hunting exhibitions concerns Arctic seal hunting. The museum also presents an exhibition on the earliest hunting period in Svalbard, where Dutchman Willem Barentsz’s famous expedition of 1596 claimed there were plentiful stocks of whale and walrus in the waters around Svalbard. Another section of the museum focuses on Norwegian polar research history. One exhibition is based on a photo collection covering Roald Amundsen’s life and exploits in the Polar Regions. The exhibition also features a host of historical objects from his various famous expeditions, some of which are Norway’s greatest treasures from this proud part of our history. The exhibition on Fridtjof Nansen’s expedition to the North Pole in the polar vessel ‘Fram’ in 1893 – 1896 is mostly based on a selection of the items available.
