Viticulture was introduced to this fertile region of Aquitaine by the Romans, and intensified in the Middle Ages. The origins of Saint-Émilion date back to 56 B.C.
Due to area’s significant geological diversity, a micro-climate ideally suited to winegrowing and skilful blending of grape varieties Saint-Émilion produces the widest range of wines among Bordeaux appellations.
In Saint-Emilion vineyard word “terroir” is used.
It reflects the alliance between 4 “ingredients”:
4 types of soil: limestone, clayey-limestone, gravelly and sandy.
3 main grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
