PELOPONISSOS – Mystra

Mystra was a fortified town in the Peloponnesus, on Mount Taygetos, near ancient Sparta. It lies approximately eight kilometres west of the modern town of Sparti. Mystra is both a city and a fortification dated back to the Middle age. The fortress is located at the top of the hill where the city itself is situated. The fortress is built in the period between 1249 and 1262. Today you can still see the magnificent wall paintings that covers most of the inside of most of the churches. It’s supposingly because of these wall paintings the churches are so well preserved. In 1989 the ruins, including the fortress, palace, churches, and monasteries, were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
